traveling with your studio

I'm in San Diego for 2 weeks training to teach Digital Electronics at my high school and I thought "I can't go that long without making music!" So, I got a laptop from my work and loaded on all my software, brought down my external harddrive and I'm in heaven again haha. The only thing I don't have with me is my rme fireface 400 (will have to bounce tracks out later), my monitors and my radium 61. I'm staying in the dorms at sdsu and so the desks are perfect to put all the gear on! This experience is cool cause it makes me realize how 'in the box' my production process really is. I brought down pretty much all my essentials in 1 laptop case. Plus, it made me realize how awesome it is to have a badass laptop (saving for my own, but i will rape and pillage my work laptop until i get my own). Has anybody else been able to travel and produce at the same time?

Re: traveling with your studio

yeah I do the same as calculon when travelling or at nighttime, does the job.
I made a couple projects last time I went up to Portland using the bare minimum. Couldn't get proper tuning n mastering at all with my headphones, so I had to wait till I came home

if u are going to buy a decent laptop, I recommend the macbook pro... built tough, runs windows great.

love my radium61 :D

Re: traveling with your studio

Every year I take a trip back home to Hawaii for 3 weeks or so and always bring my laptop, just in case I want to write some tunes. My biggest peeve about having a portable setup is not having my monitors(Dynaudio Bm5a's). I can mix ok on the headphones, but with my monitors I always know what is going on with the sound. Also, not having two computer screens slows me down a bit. I guess this wouldn't affect Reason users, but I use Fl Studio. I have a m-audio ozone that I bring as well. Its kinda laggy(midi anyway), I bought it used, so maybe thats why. I like having the option of having some pre-amps just in case. I never really write that many tunes on the laptop. I guess I am spoiled by my home studio. Instead of trying to write tunes, I try and learn something(production wise). Focusing on learning a plugin in and out or diff. ways to process breaks, etc...

Re: traveling with your studio

I like making music on my lappy.

It serves two purposes besides portability:

1. Due to the massive difference in processing power from my desktop (Read: Painfully slow), I'm forced to make more frugal & effective decisions musically. Less stuff = more goodness. Then, when I've gotten maximum bang for my buck, throw the song into the real studio with real monitors & gear for the endgame.

2. It allows you to test out wacky plugs & software I wouldn't dare test out on my Desktop.

That is all.

Re: traveling with your studio

..and yes, laptops are the s**t and very handy. it could never match my desktop but it certainly comes in very handy.

Re: traveling with your studio

the 'no monitors' thing seems to be a problem. i definitely don't think i mix as well on my headphones as I do with my monitors. Are there any headphones you guys have used that you are happy mixing with?

Re: traveling with your studio

Sennheiser open ears.

but seriously, if you mix in headphones at a LOWER volume it helps. Blasting it makes it difficult to hear minor imperfections or leveling issues, at least IMO.

Re: traveling with your studio

yeah man...

My macbook pro has been through a lot... lugged around all the time, knocked around, scratched, dropped 4 times (once on concrete)

Yeah this was my first laptop, I didn't use too much precaution until I finally dropped it on the concrete, good learning lesson...
this MBP laptop still works like a champ!! only a few battlescars

As for mixing down with headphones.... I used the tech12's, the sonys and those heavy-ass pioneers, and they all gave me lousy mixdowns. I always had to wait till I go home to properly tune.
I'm sure if you train enough u could be able to do it...

Re: traveling with your studio

good question, I'd like to know as well...

For cleaning the screen, I heard apple recommends isopropyl 50% (if you have stronger, just dilute it with more water) and a fine cloth or soft paper towel.

Re: traveling with your studio

I've been working out of my laptop for a bout a year now. I agree with ryan about the fact that it forces you to be more creative with the raw elements of production without worrying about the details. I've been one to mix as I write my music for years but this past year I've kind of detached the two. I dont worry much about the ultimate sound of the mix while im still creating the main concepts of the tune. as far as finishing a tune, not gonna happen on my laptop simply cause i dont have enough dsp.

Re: traveling with your studio

I'm glad you mentioned the bit about mixing as you're producing. I've been the same way about mixing my tunes as I create them. I'm trying to get out of the habit now cause I think it will streamline my production process, but it's been a hard habit to break. I find it's easier to do if I start with cleaner sounds cause then I don't have to balance as much.

Re: traveling with your studio

absolutely. crap in, crap out. the only way i've been able to handle still working on a laptop for the last year without killing my self is because most of the sounds i use to begin with i have already used and tweaked in previous tunes. between using your own sounds that you know work well and bringing in new well balanced sounds from other sources you should be able to pull it off.
