Keepin it alive
this was a review i found about an event we hosted at our warehouse space.
""All For you" was moved to Pharoah's last night so I decided I was going to go to Sweet City LA thank you party. Then that got raided early.
So With nothing left to do at 9 30 PM I decided I was going to go to the gym. As I'm about to leave, I think "oh, what the hell let's see if maybe another party is going on tonight. I quickly check another board, find one in Downtown LA, have 5 minutes of hesitation(Do I really wanna deal with driving that far, paying money, going alone and there being absolutely no one i know, etc.)
After 5 minutes and a really quick shower, my white Ghast pants are on and I have directions to the shuttle point, a sketch place in downtown LA. (you knew i'd choose this, duh!)
I get there, find free parking by the shuttle point, get in the large white van, and chit chat with the driver while we waited some. Apparently the guys throwing this used to throw forest parties every other weekend before the Rave act. Cool!
We drive about 2 miles.....we're now in the most rundown part of downtown LA. Love it! We pull into an alley where you can hear music. Driver tells us to get out, we do so,and proceed upstairs to the second level of a converted warehouse.
Lady at the door takes my 10 dollars(yup, a 9pm -6am, two room party for 10 dollars at the door, when I get there at 10) and i walk forward.
The Techno/Deep House room I named the I DGAF about the outside world and the system does not know we are here! room, and the other, Trip hop/ambient/Downtempo/Dub was simply, The Culture Shock. Those are the names I gave.
Walk into the DGAF room.
To my right is a giant fake wooden clock on the wall with wings, reminiscent of a Dali piece with a woman's leg hanging over a broken part of it. Back of this room, against a wall lined with army leaf camouflage netting, are a ton of plush couches and three giant fans.
In back of the stage set-up and large sound system was the cut outs of a house with giant gears on it, and in front of that the DJ spinning on vinyl.
To the far side of the room, giant torpedoes sitting upside down, tail in the air.
And to the very side of where the DJ was, more couches in a rectangle around a table to chill at.
Oh and there was a giant disco ball spinning with blue and red lights reflecting off of it, making the room really trippy. The deep house/Techno music just furthered that.
The Culture shock room. Paintings lined the wall. It felt like a gallery and i assume it is during the day, but these pieces were extraordinarily unique and weird. Some psychedelic ones, some portraits, some abstract, but all very colorful and with exaggerations or alterations that made them stand out. There were the same couches on the left side of this room and the back.
And one of the artists was painting in that room, as this went on.
In here was the Trip hop/ambient/Downtempo/Dub, which was quite lovely to listen to, especially when the live PA went on and the band instruments were playing, or when the DJ would mix in a soulful ghetto track.
And here was where the open bar until 11 PM was. yay for free alcohol for the first hour i was there!
So, I really spent most of my time just dancing in the DGAF room and then relaxing in the culture chock room. I spoke to very few people, but i did not mind. The average age was around 30 i think, with myself definitely being the youngest and the closest age most likely 24 or 25.
A lot of these people were ravers in the 90's...or didn't even know they were raving but came for the sketchy underground feel and the music.
There was not one kandi kid or glowsticks....there were several people wearing glow bracelets later on, around midnight.
So yeah.....I spent most of my time dancing by myself, getting lost in the music completely, even closing my eyes a lot and forgetting where I was.
It was empty at first, but it does not really matter. It got pretty full later on. In a building like this, the vibe is already set. and it is this quote that emphasizes it perfectly "...But know that while you may shut down any given party, on any given night, in any given city, in any given country or continent on this beautiful planet, you can never shut down the entire party. You don't have access to that switch, no matter what you may think. The music will never stop. The heartbeat will never fade. The party will never end...."
I had to leave early because I'm going down to Chula Vista in several minutes, but I have full faith that it went on until 6 am and that people had a blast.
I'll be checking that crew for other events in the future and will be sending some of you the info. I wasn't able to this time, cause like you read, I decided 5 minutes before leaving my house I was going.
Until then, party on. And have full faith that the underground is still alive."
Its reviews like this that make me realize why we need to keep this underground vibe alive |
